Ortega portrays Cairo Sweet, an 18-year-old heiress living alone in her family’s Tennessee mansion. Her parents, globe-trotting lawyers, are perpetually absent.

Cairo’s life revolves around lazing about, smoking, and scheming with her best friend, Winnie (played by the playful Gideon Adlon). But her boredom leads her to an ill-advised flirtation with Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman), her high school creative writing instructor. The cliché unfolds: young teacher, schoolgirl fantasies, and a forbidden connection. Yet, Miller is old enough to be her father—a failed author turned teacher, constantly reminded of his mediocrity by his wife, Beatrice (Dagmara Dominczyk).

The film’s heightened banter between Cairo and Jonathan initially crackles with wrongness, but it eventually grows wearisome.
