The film follows a married couple, portrayed by the always-watchable Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo, who find themselves thrust into action when the wife’s secret job as an assassin comes to light. While it doesn’t break any new ground, it manages to avoid the pitfalls that often plague similar films.

Cuoco, fresh off her success in The Flight Attendant, takes on the role of a suburban mom with a double life – globe-trotting assassin by day, PTA meetings by night. Her chemistry with Oyelowo injects energy into the proceedings, even if the wattage is slightly lower than the A-list stars we’re accustomed to. The film’s victory lies in not being as atrocious as some of its counterparts, a bronze medal in a field where gold is elusive.

Argylle [2024]

“Argylle,” directed by Matthew Vaughn, is an action-packed spy adventure that aims for the same level of absurdity that made Vaughn’s “Kingsman” franchise so enjoyable. However, it stumbles over its own high-concept premise at every turn.

The film introduces us to Agent Argylle (played by Henry Cavill), who infiltrates a Greek-set club and encounters the enigmatic LaGrange (portrayed by Dua Lipa). Their sultry dance is cut short by a hail of bullets from a group of villains. With the help of his team—a tech guru (Ariana DeBose) and a sidekick (John Cena)—Argylle embarks on a chase through narrow streets, reminiscent of classic James Bond scenes.

The twist? These characters are actually creations of author Elly Conway (played by Bryce Dallas Howard), who writes the bestselling Argylle series. Elly’s novels inadvertently mirror real-life espionage missions, leading assassins to believe she possesses classified information. Enter Aidan (portrayed by Sam Rockwell), a believable spy who blurs the lines between reality and fiction.

While the film initially pokes fun at spy movie tropes, it eventually loses its comedic edge, attempting to fit into the mold of a typical spy flick. Major stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Richard E. Grant, and Ariana DeBose find themselves in thankless roles due to a lackluster script. The film’s editing and lighting also falter, and the bombastic use of the Beatles’ track “Now and Then” feels out of place.
